Obama fails: Obamacare, Paris Climate Accord, Iran Nuclear Deal....
POLITICS COMMENTARY
The Obama Legacy Deserves to Be Destroyed David Harsanyi / @davidharsanyi / May 11, 2018 / DAILY SIGNAL David Harsanyi is a senior editor at The Federalist and the author of the forthcoming "First Freedom: A Ride through America's Enduring History With the Gun, From the Revolution to Today." It’s strange that a president who had such a transformative effect on our national discourse will leave such a negligible policy legacy. But Barack Obama, whose imperial term changed the way Americans interact and in some ways paved the way for the Trump presidency, is now watching his much-celebrated and mythologized two-term legacy be systematically demolished. This, in many ways, tells us that American governance still works. When President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, he was able to do so without much difficulty because the agreement hinged on presidential fiat rather than national consensus. Obama’s appeasement of Iran was only one in a string of unilateral norm-busting projects that deserve to be dismantled. You’ll remember the panic-stricken coverage we endured when the United States withdrew from the faux international Paris climate agreement last year. It’s true that the deal was oversold as a matter of policy (by both parties for political reasons), but it was symbolic of how the Obama administration concerned itself more with international consensus than domestic compromise. We know this because the president would never have won ratification for a deal remotely similar to the one he entered—nor did he attempt to. Obama, despite the hagiographic framing of his scandal-ridden presidency, had about as much interest in genuine concession as his political adversaries did. read more Obama. Erased.
Wayne Allyn Root TOWNHALL May 11, 2018 12:01 AM I live in Las Vegas. I'm the number one conservative talk show host in this town. I know every show on the Vegas Strip. Don't look now, but Donald Trump is the second coming of David Copperfield. And Obama is the rabbit. Trump has made Obama disappear. It's magic! I told you so. Both before the election and after, I predicted Donald Trump would make Obama disappear. I predicted he'd erase Obama’s entire legacy. He’d make our long national Obama nightmare disappear. He’d make the misery of the Obamageddon economy go away. He’d erase Obama like he was never there. In one bold stroke of his pen on Tuesday, Trump did just that. President Trump nuked the Iran deal. He shocked the world. But not me. On my Newsmax TV show on Monday night I not only predicted that’s exactly what Trump would do…I gave my advice to the President. I said, “Kill it. Kill it. Kill it. Stick a sword through the heart of the Iran deal like a vampire. Don’t play around the edges. Don’t reform it. Don’t compromise. Just make it die. It’s the worst deal in America’s history. Obama made us look like fools. The Iranians played him for a chump. He gave away everything, including the kitchen sink. Obama gave the crazy, mentally unstable, terrorist, Jew-hating Mullahs of Iran everything they ever wanted in their wildest dreams- including billions in cash. Shock the world Mr. President. Kill it. Take it all away from them. Show them who’s the boss. Put America First. 63 million Trump voters will love you forever. Your approval ratings will go through the roof. That’s my advice.” read more The Wipeout of Obama’s Legacy
FRED BARNES WEEKLY STANDARD May 11, 2018 4:00 AM President Obama’s legacy is rapidly vanishing. The decision by President Trump to withdraw from the nuclear deal with Iran is the biggest blow, but it’s only the latest. The elimination of the individual mandate and canceling the yearly bailout of insurance companies have left Obamacare in a precarious condition. Young immigrants whose parents brought them to the United States unlawfully—so-called dreamers—are losing their legal status. This is historic. Presidents often vow to wipe out big chunks of their predecessor’s legacies. President Eisenhower was going to take on the New Deal. Ronald Reagan targeted the Great Society. Both backed down. Trump, working with congressional Republicans, hasn’t. He’s eager to deflate Obama’s standing and inflate his own. Obama and Democrats have made Trump’s efforts surprisingly easy. Obama, you’ll recall, succeeded brilliantly in the first two years of his presidency when Democrats controlled Congress. But once Republicans held the House, Senate, or both over the next six years, he ignored Capitol Hill as much as possible. He spared himself the unpleasantness of compromising with Republicans and instead governed by executive orders and regulations. Decisions taken by the president alone are vulnerable to being erased by subsequent presidents. And that’s what happened to the pact with Iran. It wasn’t a treaty ratified by the Senate. Democrats used the filibuster to block even a nonbinding vote on it. Trump killed the deal with his signature. That was also all it took to quit the Paris accord on global warming. read more "It is an honor to be nominated with two of the most talented editorial cartoonists today and two of my favorite people." -Michael P.
