COMEY: I AM NOT A WEASEL [UPDATED WITH CARTOON]
FBI Director James Comey’s appearance before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday deserves the attention of every American who cares about the rule of law, as many opponents of Donald Trump purport to do. C-SPAN has posted its recording of Comey’s testimony here. I clipped the video of Rep. Ron DeSantis’s questioning of Comey (posted here) from the C-SPAN video.
In my mind Comey’s testimony recalls the dark days of Watergate. Richard Nixon never had it so good, but Comey echoed Nixon with the unforgettable declaration before the committee (at about 1:05 of the video below): “You can call us wrong, but don’t call us weasels. We are not weasels. We are honest people and…whether or not you agree with the result, this was done the way you want it to be done.”
Students of ancient history, compare and contrast with Richard Nixon’s statement on Watergate in 1973 before the fall: “And I want to say this to the television audience. I made my mistakes. But in all of my years of public life, I have never profited – never profited from public service. I’ve earned every cent. And in all of my years of public life, I have never obstructed justice…people have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I’m not a crook. I’ve earned everything I’ve got.”
